Chateau
de la Loire:
This visit lasts all day. Since time immemorial the
kings of France have resided in this area because
of its natural resources and its moderate climate,
as the vast castles built along the Loire Valley will
testify.
The day begins with a visit to the most prestigious
of all, the Chateau de Chambord. This was built by
François I from 1519, and is graced by the
genius of Leonardo da Vinci who created the designs
for the famous twin-flighted staircase. It nestles
in a beautiful forest.
We continue the tour with the Chateau de Chenenceau,
also known as the Ladies Chateau, built on a
tributary of the Loire, the river Cher. This was home
to the favourite of Henri II, Diane de Poitiers, and
later by the queen Catherine de Medici, and there
was a great rivalry between these two ladies of the
16th century. The gardens surrounding the castle are
also visited.
The day ends with the Chateau dAmboise, one
of the first built on the actual Loire. This is alive
with history, and offers a remarkable view of the
area. It is also interesting to visit the tomb of
Leonardo da Vinci, as the last resting place of the
great artist is in the chapel here.
